The girls cricketers trained regularly and enthusiastically this summer so it was a shame when the Whitburn District tournament was rained off. Nevertheless, as current champions of South Tyneside we were invited to play in a District Play-Off to determine who would go through to the County Final. The game was to be played against Mortimer and at Mortimer school. The girls were delighted with the opportunity and played superbly to win at Mortimer in the play-off game.
As a result on June 17th at 8.25am we set off in a mini bus for the County finals at Stockton CC. The girls started brilliantly! An opening win against Eldon Grove (Hartlepool), followed by victories against Leadgate Juniors (Derwentside) and Copeland Road ( Wear Valley/Teesdale) meant that the girls came top of their group. The manner of the victories were particularly impressive as all three games saw a winning margin of at least 35 runs!
In the afternoon the girls were drawn against The Village (Stockton) in the semi-final. After an exciting game we lost by 11 runs. While the girls couldn't quite reach the heights of their morning performances they could be very proud of a brilliant cup run that saw them become one of the top four sides in County Durham. Well played girls, you gave it everything....clearly, as most fell asleep on the way home in the minibus - haha
