On Friday night, St. Bede’s were triumphant in the Northumberland Tyne and Wear Basketball Finals. Six District winners from around the region battled it out at Sport Central, Newcastle, in a bid to be crowned Champion of Champions!
Every team played each other in a Champions League. We played fluent attacking basketball, displaying outstanding shooting, as we registered 5 convincing victories to storm into the final. We beat Preston Grange ( North Tyneside) 4-0, Byker (Newcastle) 8-2, Richard Avenue (Sunderland) 8-2, Glynwood (Gateshead) 6-2 and Richard Coates (Northumberland) 10-2. We scored the most baskets, while still having the best defensive record. Byker also qualified for the Regional Final after finishing second in the group.
In a high level final, both teams pushed hard for the win, but defences were on top. Byker played a great game and put us under strong pressure in certain moments of the final. However, we showed a lot of character to defend resiliently as a team. A decisive basket could not be found by either team, so we went to penalties.
The top scorer in the competition- the nerveless Jude Hill scored the decisive shot to clinch victory for our school. After winning all of our group games so decisively, then collectively defending so well in the final when we were under pressure, I think we thoroughly deserved our victory!
The cup was presented by two members of Team GB's silver medallist winning Commonwealth Games Basketball team. Afterwards, the scenes of joy were wonderful for the players and families.
Congratulations to the brilliant players- Will Watson (Captain), Keira Murphy (Vice-Captain), Jude Hill, Darcey Tullis, Lucas Britton, Charlotte Newbrook and Saul Connor. Thank you to all the families and support we received at Sport Central.
