I'm delighted to write that we were by far the best supported school at the Hoops4health Basketball finals night, with a 150 people from our school community in attendance!!! This shows the wonderful, collective enjoyment we all share for school sport at St. Bede’s.
Our school team, which had won ten consecutive qualifying games to reach this stage of the competition, were inspired by the enthusiastic support in the semi-final. A fantastic performance saw us run out 4-0 winners, against an organised Harton team. This set up a mouth-watering final, between the two must successful schools in Hoops4health history, St. Bede’s RC South Shields and St. Aloysius.
Unfortunately for ourselves, the current national champions were to prove too strong. However, cheered on by our sensational support, we still finished game the strongest side and gave a very good account of ourselves. I was very proud of the dedicated and talented players (Katie Heslop, Lauren Tooley, Niamh Ullah, Ben Scott, Matthew Thompson, Matthew Cain and Joseph Meling-Butler) for their positive approach towards training, and the amazing community support on the night!
I’m sure there will be some younger St. Bede’s children in the crowd who will be proudly wearing the school basketball vests in the future.
St. Bede’s loud and proud! B. McVittie
