The Y3/4 and Y5/6 Athletics team's took part in the Tyne and Wear Finals at Silksworth last Thursday. We enjoyed a colourful Opening Ceremony involving music and dance, while the children paraded around the venue in our South Tyneside t-shirts. An inspiring speech was also delivered by Great Britain Long Jumper Chris Kirk.
When the action got started all of the children performed brilliantly, as they competed in a long run, sprint, long jump and howler throw. The Y3/4 team finished in fourth place, just outside the medals; while the Y5/6 team finished a highly creditable 5th.
There were some particularly exceptional individual performances on the day. Jake Waters came second overall, while Lily Jary was fifth. Leroy Velasco-Luckham won the Long Jump event with a jump of 1.99m; this was a jump that would have got second in the Y6 event! Mariz Hipos won the Howler throw and also got second in the Long Jump. Meanwhile, the Y5/6 Howler Throw was won by Megan Tooley.
Well done to the whole squad who were a credit to themselves and South Tyneside!
